I only recently became acquainted with the iconic, beautiful, and compelling Indian actress Sridevi--who was in nearly 300 films. She has now suddenly passed away at the only 54. This is a terrible loss, so I'm taking this moment to recommend both Mom and English Vinglish, two of her more recent films. Mom is a rape-revenge thriller, released in 2017. After her step-daughter is brutally assaulted by a gang of men, step-mom Devki takes matters into her own hands. Mom is pretty great, while not for those easily triggered by brutal violence. This is a tight thriller. 4/5 English Vinglish is a little older, released in 2012. In English Vinglish, Sridevi plays the matriarch to a family who underestimates and takes her for granted. Being the only one in her family to not speak any English, Shashi decides to secretly take English classes. This film is so lovely and wonderful. If you don't feel great after watching English Vinglish, I don't know what's wrong with you! 5/5 |

Tickled is one of the most intriguing and strange documentaries I've seen in a while. This is a film about a journalist from New Zealand who stumbles on a weird website about "Competitive Endurance Tickling" and in doing so, inadvertently happens to uncover a very tangled and twisted plot of blackmail and threats, reaching far beyond investigating a strange youtube video and the production company behind it and others like it. This is super fascinating and bizarre. 4/5 Gone Girl is an American thriller directed by David Fincher, and adapted from the novel by Gillian Flynn. Gone Girl is about the aftermath of the disappearance of a beautiful young wife, Amy. The film is essentially a mystery about the events surrounding Amy's disappearance, and the consequences that her husband, Nick, has to endure when he becomes a suspect. This film is absolutely riveting. It unfolds in two parts, one showing the events through the perspective of the husband, and then through the wife's eyes. In many ways this film is about the disintegration of a marriage. Rosamund Pike is excellent as the icy Amy. 4/5 |
